Shuggie Otis, Kurt Vile among new lineup of artists for MidPoint Music Festival 2013

CINCINNATI - The MidPoint Music Festival announced an additional 14 acts slated to play at this year's indie rock festival in the fall.

Not only is the fest bringing in some of the best regional and national acts to Cincinnati, but also legendary artists like Shuggie Otis , who MPMF organizers proclaim as one of the most mysterious pop figures of the 20th Century.

Otis, the son of famous record musician and producer Johnny Otis, will be MPMF's "original pioneer" at this year's event, festival organizers announced Wednesday. Otis has played professional guitar since the age of 11 when he performed with his father's group, The Johnny Otis Group.

Known for his popular single "Strawberry Letter 23," Otis, now 59, released his first album in nearly 40 years, "Wings of Love," in April. Rolling Stone has referred to Otis as "…a missing link between Sly, Jimi, Stevie, Prince and Frank Ocean."

“MPMF has always been known for the pioneering music we showcase, but I am especially excited and proud to present Shuggie Otis,” said Dan McCabe, artistic director of MPMF.13, in a release. “Unlike other original pioneers presented at past MPMFs like Ralph Stanley, Booker T. and Van Dyke Parks, Shuggie’s impact is only just now coming to light. Shuggie Otis speaks directly to the MPMF artist who often sacrifices success and notoriety for their art.”

Otis will headline at the stage in Washington Park with Cody ChestnuTT during MPMF.

Also among this year's lineup is Kurt Vile , former band member of indie rock band The War on Drugs. Vile's solo career launched him into a new realm of success over the years with five studio albums, including 2013's "Walking on a Pretty Day," and international tours.

Both Rolling Stone and SPIN Magazine have sung praises for Vile's latest effort, as one of the "must-see" artists of 2013 and a "SPIN essential," respectively.

The other artists announced Wednesday to perform at this year's festival include Youth Lagoon, On an On, Baths, Murder by Death, Bleached, Saturday Looks Good to Me, San Fermin, Secret Colours, Nat Baldwin, Wild Cub, The Shilohs, and Birds of Chicago.

Earlier this month MPMF announced the initial lineup, which includes headlining acts The Breeders and The Head and The Heart. The full list can be viewed here: http://www.wcpo.com/dpp/entertainment/citybeat/local_music/midpoint-music-festival-releases-initial-lineup-for-2013 .

The festival is set to take place Sept. 26-28 and more than 150 acts are expected to perform on various stages throughout downtown and Over-the-Rhine.
