In newest work, Exhale Dance Tribe invites its audience to breathe alongside them

Performance 'installation' May 17 at Aronoff

CINCINNATI -- Missy Lay Zimmer and Andrew Hubbard met while dancing together in the final Broadway run for “Cats.” Soon after, they moved to Cincinnati—Zimmer grew up here—to launch a dance school and, eventually, their dance company, the Exhale Dance Tribe .

Today, the company is rooted in jazz dance, with accents of modern, contemporary, hip-hop and ballet. Zimmer and Hubbard are also in demand as choreographers, setting work on the Cincinnati Ballet, among other groups. The couple recently married.

They describe their newest work, "Mannequin," as a dance installation. The audience surrounds the dancers on all sides of the black-box theater inside the Aronoff Center—there are no seats for these performances—and the choreographers are inviting the audience to walk among the dancers during the 45-minute piece.

In this video, we meet Zimmer and Hubbard and watch some of the movement that goes into "Mannequin."
