DogBerry Brewing: Former scientists to open new nanobrewery in West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- Craft beer lovers in West Chester will soon have a new brewery to enjoy that won’t have them traveling far afield.

Two stay-at-home dads are behind the new DogBerry Brewing nanobrewery at 7865 Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

According to the Journal-News , co-owners Tony Meyer, 39, and Chris Frede, 36, are two former research scientists.

“I’ve been brewing for about 16 years and it’s something that’s been a hobby of mine for close to 20 years, and Chris, as well. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be stay-at-home dads so we saw an opportunity along with that to take a shot at chasing a dream,” Meyer told the Journal-News.

The brewers plan to offer 10 craft beers at their tap room. The five year-round beers will be: a rye pale ale, India Pale Ale, Kolsch, brown ale and blonde ale. The others will be seasonal brews.

DogBerry will open up shop with a one-barrel brew house and eight two-barrel fermenters. The team said that will allow them to do double batches for year-round beers.

Meyer said they hope to produce about 220 barrels in the first year. Kegs will eventually be available for purchase.

The beers will cost $4 to $7 per serving depending on what style you pick. DogBerry will also sell growlers; those should cost $14 to $20.

The tap room will seat about 40 people and a second bar will serve as the merchandising counter.

A unique aspect of the operation is that Frede and Meyer plan on occasionally brewing outside for people to watch.

The two men said they modeled their 2,400-square-foot brewery after Pacific Northwest breweries.

“The appeal (of a nano brewery) for us is we can control every aspect of the business, of the operation,” Meyer said. “There will be just two of us that handle all of it. If there is any distribution, it will be very small and local.”

The pair said they plan on staying small and controlling their product closely. Staying small will also benefit the lifestyle they hope to maintain as fathers.

“We want to be more married to our families than to our business,” Meyer said.

DogBerry has a one-year lease with an option for second and third years.
