MORROW, Ohio -- He served his country with distinction. Now a fallen Marine’s best friend will honor him with help from a local brewer.
Marine Cpl. Steven Kohus, of Morrow, died on March 2, 2014 in a shooting at a home in Twentynine Palms in California. He was 26 years old and slated to be discharged in November.
A fellow Marine, Cpl. Brock Myers, of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, faces charges in connection with Kohus’ death.
The brewers at Cellar Dweller Brewery in Morrow will honor Kohus with a special beer during a tapping at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Head Brewer Steve Shaw said they are calling their new American Pale Ale "Corporal Khaos” in homage of Kohus.
The aromatic brew was made with Columbus and Citra hops. It comes in at 5.8% ABV and 45 IBU (International Bittering Units.)
Shaw said the beer came to be after Kohus’ friend, Ben Martin, came to him and asked to take part of the brewery’s “So you want to be a brewer” series involving local homebrewers.
The series allows local homebrewers to come to the brewery and make a batch on the brewery’s 10-barrel brew house with help and direction from Shaw. The beer is then put on tap at the brewery/winery.
Shaw said that when he heard Martin’s story, he pushed the beer to the top of the list immediately to help honor Kohus.
Martin said he knew Kohus and they were best friends since kindergarten.
“It is very difficult for me to describe Steve to someone who did not meet him. You might describe him as funny, caring, crazy (in a good way). But those words alone don’t do him justice; his personality was larger than life,” Martin said in a release.
Martin has been a home brewer for about two years now and has been brewing with his brother-in-law after getting a kit from his in-laws.
He said the idea for the homage beer came to him while working on a pale ale recipe. Martin said it came to him the night before Kohus’ funeral service.
“The Khaos is a reference to a personal nickname,” Martin said. “Steve was a great friend, ... Anyone who has met him has a story about him.”
Kohus worked at Morgan’s Canoe before during the summers before joining the Marines. He was a 2006 Little Miami High School graduate and began serving in the Marines in 2010. His service included a tour in Afghanistan.
“When you try Corporal Khaos just take a minute to honor Steve’s memory,” Martin said.
Kohus served as a motor-transport mechanic and was awarded several citations and medals.
His family and friends said they will be on hand to tap the beer.
