Instead of giving your mom some boring necklace or a vase full of flowers this weekend, how about taking her to the "region's most popular spring festival" for Mother's Day? The 43rd annual Appalachian Festival is a three-day event that celebrates and helps raise awareness of Appalachian culture.
The heritage is alive and well here in the region, with more than 300,000 people claiming Appalachian ancestry. Mountain life will be on full display over the weekend with music, food and living history. Featured headliners The Tillers will be playing on Saturday night, but expect to hear mountain music throughout the entire festival. If you want to do more for your mom, there will also be more than 100 handcrafters and gift-makers from throughout the Appalachian region. Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13. Coney Island. 6201 Kellogg Ave., California. 513-251-3378, appalachianfestival.org .
