MIAMI, Fla. - LeBron James calls it a “sensitive subject” after his mother, Gloria James, was arrested Thursday morning at a hotel in Miami Beach after a valet said she assaulted him.

The alleged incident happened at about 4:47 a.m. at the Fontainebleau Hotel.

According to a news release from Miami Beach police, a valet at the hotel, Sorel Rockfeller, told officers Gloria James assaulted him because she was angry her car was taking too long to be delivered.

The police report states Rockfeller pulled Gloria James’ black SUV up to the valet ramp at Gloria’s request and waited 30 minutes for her to get in it while she was talking to other people outside the hotel. At this point, the valet turned off the car and gave the keys to the cashier.

A short time later, according to the report, James confronted Rockfeller, asking “Where are my (expletive) keys?” and yelled profanities at him. While Rockfeller was explaining the situation, police said James struck him on the right side of his face with an open hand. She lost her balance in the process and fell down.

Police said several witnesses confirmed the statement given by Rockfeller.

“Ms. James was apparently intoxicated as she had bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath,” the news release stated.

"She was drunk...common terms," said Officer Wayne Jones with Miami Beach Police. "We don't know what she was doing prior to being arrested. I'm pretty certain though, that Ms. James is probably a very lovely lady when she's sober. This morning, she was not so much."

Police said both Gloria James and a woman driving her car were initially uncooperative with the investigating officer. The police report said James initially refused to give police her identification card.

“Don’t give him anything, don’t give him my purse,” Gloria James told the driver of her car while the officer was standing there.

Gloria James was arrested and taken to the Miami Beach Police Department to be processed.

While at the police station, the report states James was very uncooperative toward officers, insisting she did nothing wrong.

“I’m trying to trust you, but I don’t trust your kind. I don’t trust that officer who arrested me,” James told police.

She was charged with simply battery and disorderly conduct and then released to Miami Heat executive Steve Stowe, the report stated.

"It's a sensitive subject," LeBron James told the Associated Press after the Heat practiced Thursday afternoon. "It's a personal matter. It's being taken care of."

LeBron James said he was not at the hotel at the time of the incident.

"You have to move forward," LeBron James said. "It is my life and there's certain things you have to deal with. You try not to let it be a distraction. I have a job to do, still."

Locally in Cleveland, people had a lot to say about Thursday's arrest.

"Just stop," said Heather Hubbard. "You know that you're in the spotlight. If you want to be loud and wild then take your name out of the scene. She should have stayed in Cleveland and let him go by himself."

This is not the first time Gloria James has been in trouble with the authorities.

In 2006, she was arrested by Akron police on charges of drunken driving and disorderly conduct. She was sentenced to three days in a state driving intervention program and fined in court after she pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charges.
