In the latest “State of the Climate Report” issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s, or NOAA’s, National Climatic Data Center, the U.S. had it’s second warmest May, and the hottest spring on record!

NOAA reports that “the average temperature for the contiguous U.S. during May was 64.3°F, 3.3°F above the long-term average , making it the second warmest May on record. The month's high temperatures also contributed to the warmest spring, warmest year-to-date, and warmest 12-month period the nation has experienced since recordkeeping began in 1895.”

This spring, from March through May, has been warm as well. The national average temperature for that time period was “57.1°F, 5.2°F above the 1901-2000 long-term average .” This breaks the record for the warmest spring ever, which occurred in 1910!

On a side note, above average temperatures were recorded across all parts of the low 48, with the exception of the Northwest, during May. NOAA reports that “twenty-six states had May temperatures ranking among their ten warmest.”
