The state of Ohio recognizes March 3-9, 2013 as “Spring Severe Weather Safety Awareness Week.”
Created by Gov. John Kasich, the week of awareness is designed to encourage the importance of severe weather preparedness.
A statewide tornado drill is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 at 9:50 a.m. The University of Cincinnati plans to test its Emergency Alert System at noon Wednesday in conjunction with Hamilton and Clermont counties’ test of the siren system.
While Ohio experiences severe weather throughout the year, the month of March is known for producing two of the most devastating natural disasters in the state's history – the Great Ohio Flood of 1913 and the tornadoes of 2012.
On Saturday, southwestern Ohio remembered the tornadoes that ripped through the Tri-State March 2, 2012. The tornadoes killed 11 people in the area, destroyed 343 structures and damaged thousands more.
The Great Ohio Flood killed 467 people and destroyed 20,000 homes from March 22 through March 27, 1913.
