Potholes: Information on reporting and filing claims

CINCINNATI - After having some warm and soggy weather, and now the cold returning...the melting and refreezing of ice helps create dangerous potholes.

"We're getting an increase of flats due to potholes," said Roderic Hendrix of Bob Sumerel Tires & Service downtown, adding that sometimes you can damage the wheel, which is more expensive than fixing a tire. 

He says, "My first suggestion if you get a flat…stop. Change it.  Put the spare on.  If you don't have a spare, call a service and let them take it to the nearest location so you don't cause more damage to the tire or wheel, because some times they can be saved."

The best way to save money is to keep from getting a flat. We talked to the Division Manager of the City of Newport, Ray Ebert, and he has some suggestions as well.

"If you see a pothole, slow down and try to avoid it, until we get there and take care of it."

We caught up with a city of Newport road crew, fixing some trouble spots on Carothers Road. 

"If you do run across a pothole and it causes damage to the vehicle, you can call the city and report it."

If it's a state road, you want to report pothole problems to the departments of transportation in Indiana, Ohio, or Kentucky.  In some cases you can even file a claim for any damage caused by the pothole.
