Duke Energy preps for high winds, possible power outages

CINCINNATI - Strong storms and high winds are in the forecast for the region later this week, putting the Tri-State at a slight risk for severe weather.

As the weather changes approach, Duke Energy officials say they're ready in the event of a mass power outage in the Tri-State.

Duke Energy spokesperson Sally Thelen says line technicians, service crew and personnel will be on hand this week. Crews are also checking equipment, supplies and inventories ahead of the storms.

Thelen reminds customers to check their supplies for flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable foods, medicines, a portable, battery-operated radio, TV or a NOAA radio. The WCPO Storm Shield weather app is also available for download which sends life-saving information and updates to your smartphone.

People with special medical needs or the elderly should take precautions and make arrangements as necessary if an outage occurs.

During a storm, Thelen warns people should stay away from sagging or fallen power lines. Consider all lines energized as well as trees or limbs in contact with lines. If a power line falls across a vehicle you're in, stay in the car unless it's a life-threatening situation. If so, then do your best to stay clear of the car and land on both feet, making sure your body is not touching the car when you touch the ground.

Downed lines can be reported to police departments or Duke Energy by calling 1-800-544-6900.
