CINCINNATI - With this latest cool snap, we’re all starting to think about the cold temperatures that are on the way. There are some things that you can do now while the weather is nice to prepare your home for cooler weather.

Rick Bauknecht at Beck Paint and Hardware has some great ideas on ways to get ready for cooler temperatures.

“We have different types of foam weather stripping that you might want to use in your door jams and your window jams,” Bauknecht said. “Basically, you want to concentrate on the roof, windows, and siding.”

The Department of Energy says drafts can increase your energy use by up to 30 percent. Bauknecht says that you should weather-tight the exterior of your home, and get that painting done while the weather is good.

So how much will all of this cost?

“The cost of the materials is pretty inexpensive, and if you can do it yourself, you’re going to save a lot of money,” Bauknecht said.

A few more suggestions from Bauknecht:

-If you have a brick house, check mortar, and repair if needed

-Get your gutters inspected for leaks

-Do any necessary outdoor caulking and painting

-Check patio doors for drafts and fix if needed

-Can use foam or Styrofoam rods for fixing leaks

-Stock up on salt and shovels for winter
