Clearly, there are plenty of people who face the same situation that I do today. While my wife and I love each other…there is no way we’ll be together tonight as a couple.
I might loose my man card for this, but it bothers me. I haven’t been married for nearly 25 years by accident. My spouse is not just my wife, but my best friend. My stock line has only been, “I fooled one good woman into loving me, and I’m not going to foul it up!” Last night at 1am, officially Valentine’s Day, Julie and I shared a glass of wine and talked. We’ve always been able to talk; it’s our best attribute as a couple.
My wife, Julie, has recently thrown herself into fundraising for her alma mater, Mercy High School. The biggest fundraiser of the year is this Saturday and, at this point, every minute counts. In fact, my son even joked that, “We’ve lost mom for the week, huh Dad?” It’s all too true, but that’s fine because by Sunday our life returns to normal…or as normal as our life gets!
However, this morning, as the TV blared about love, the paper showed floating Valentines, and the even the Google logo melded into a couple cartoon, it dawned on me that we were lucky to share that one glass of wine.
The barrage of valentine talk made me think about the couples who have it much worse than we do! Some couples need to always work so hard and become two ships passing in the night just to make ends meet. I also thought about the couple split apart because of military service. It’s quite likely those couples won’t even talk, forget about sharing a glass of wine. Worse yet, I imagined someone sitting bedside with their significant other who is in dire straits.
So, today when you hear about, “Valentine’s Day Deals, great restaurants for lovers, the best heart warming gifts, forget about the hype! Call, talk, share that one moment and realize how fortunate that you are to be with the one you love!
