SOUTHGATE, Ky. - The Southgate Police Department released new information about the multiple-vehicle accident in Northern Kentucky that claimed the life of a pregnant mother and her unborn child the day before.
A Ford van carrying six people was traveling northbound on Interstate 471 in Southgate, Ky. when the driver, Erik Dixon, lost control near I-275 around 4:30 p.m. The van crossed over the grass median and struck a southbound Mazda four-door vehicle. The Mazda then hit a four-door Plymouth vehicle. The van continued and struck a guardrail.
Lori Howe, of Southgate, was one of four people ejected from the van. She was pronounced dead at University Hospital. She leaves behind a 5-year-old son.
Investigators say none of the four people ejected were wearing seat belts. Dixon and a front seat passenger were wearing seat belts, according to the sheriff's office.
The drivers of the two other vehicles were wearing their seat belts.
A total of eight people were transported to three area hospitals. Five were taken to University Hospital, two to St. Elizabeth Fort Thomas and one to St. Elizabeth Edgewood.
Officials have not released the names and conditions of the other victims.
Howe's family released information about her death Friday morning, including that she was pregnant and her unborn child died as well.
In a release, the family said they would like to thank the University Hospital medical staff, socials workers and chaplains who have comforted them since Howe's death.
A memorial fund has been set up to help the family with expenses. Those wishing to help can stop by any Fifth Third Bank and donate to the Lori and Timothy Howe Memorial Fund.
All lanes of southbound I-471 were shut down for almost four hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
