By Larry Carney, WMAR-TV We’re counting down the Top 10 Sports Stories of the Year. Each of our bloggers voted on which stories were the biggest of 2009.
Many stories this year included scandal. Others showcased historic accomplishments. The top story was an overwhelming favorite, winning the top vote of 80% of our voters.
And the NFL continues to lead sports in America. Of our 10 stories, 4 of them are from the dominant sports league.

10. Yankees Spend Millions, Win World Series
After missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade in 2008, the New York Yankees reloaded in the offseason. Free agents Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett signed with the Bronx Bombers for a total of $423 million.
The three led New York to 103 wins in the regular season. In the postseason, Sabathia and closer Mariano Rivera carried the pitching load, giving New York a World Series title in six games over the Philadelphia Phillies.
