LONDON - United States swimmer Nick Thoman, a 2004 Mariemont High School graduate, took silver in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the London Olympics Monday.

Matt Grevers, also of the United States, set an Olympic record to win the 100-meter backstroke.

Grevers finished in 52.16 seconds, 0.38 ahead of the previous mark set by fellow American Aaron Peirsol at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Thoman was second in 52.92, and Ryosuke Irie of Japan was third in 52.97. France's Camille Lacourt, who led at the turn under world-record pace, faded to fourth.

Thoman's dad says he couldn't be prouder of his son just making the Olympics.

"The family reaction was, you know, joy, amazement,"  Henry Thoman said. "I was at the Olympic trials, sitting next to his sister Victoria and I think I nearly broke her back with the hug I gave her. It was a very emotional experience for all of us, because this is really the culmination of 22 years of training and especially a hard set of training over the last three or four years."
