After losing to Colerain by three points a week ago, the St. Xavier Bombers had the daunting task or traveling to Louisville to tangle with the Trinity Shamrocks this week. For the second consecutive Friday night the Bombers picked up a loss to a nationally ranked team as they fell 14-13.
St. Xavier (2-2) got on the scoreboard first when they ate up half of the opening quarter on a scoring drive capped off by 25-yard TD pass from Nick Tensing to Cameron Dunn to put the Bombers up 7-0.
Dalyn Dawkins would pull in a 5-yard pass from Travis Wright in the second quarter to pull Trinity (4-0) to a 7-7 tie, which how things stood going to the half.
The Bombers defense kept the Shamrocks in check most of the night and won the field position battle. While the offense had three possessions in the Trinity red zone in the second half they would have to settle for just six points. Place kicker Aaron Berry connected on fields from 24 and 34 yards out to give St. X a 13-7 lead.
That is how things stood with seven minutes left in the game, but Trinity would mount a six plus minute drive to put the decisive points on the scoreboard. Starting at their own 21-yard line, the Shamrocks turned to Dawkins. The running back would carry the ball 10 times for 50 yards on the final drive, including scoring from three yards out with 29.7 seconds on the clock.
The win marked the 29th straight victory for Trinity, who prevailed in this contest despite being outgained 269 to 245 in total yards and committing the game’s only turnover.
Things don’t get any easier for St. Xavier next Friday night. After playing Trinity, the 14th ranked team in the latest Rivals100 national rankings, they return home to face 16th-ranked Moeller as they open up GCL South play.
