CINCINNATI - The Simon Kenton Pioneers exploded for 24 points in the fourth quarter en rout to a 38-20 victory over Boone County Friday night at Chlorine Menefee Stadium in Independence, Ky.

The Pioneers (7-1, 2-1) marched past the Rebels behind a 31-point second half performance. Junior quarterback Brenen Kuntz threw three touchdowns in the final two quarters, including the go-ahead 95-yard touchdown pass to classmate Grant Wassom in the fourth quarter. After stealing the lead Simon Kenton never looked back.

Boone County (1-7, 1-2) scored on their opening drive of the game on a 12-yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Jeremiah Williams to freshman tight end Thad Moss. The Pioneers responded quickly, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Andrew Sampson in their opening frame.

Late in the second quarter Moss caused Kuntz to fumble on a pass attempt allowing sophomore Aaron Floyd to pick up the ball and run 64 yards for the score. The Rebels took a 14-7 lead into the break.

Kuntz connected with Sampson on a 34-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14 early in the third quarter. On the following Boone County drive, the Pioneers’ defense stopped the Rebels at the goal line and forced a turnover on downs. The defensive stance proved pivotal as it opened the door for the 95-yard go-ahead touchdown.

The Rebels’ only score in the second half came on Floyd’s 27-yard touchdown run at the end of the fourth quarter.

Kuntz finished the game with 12 completions for 275 yards and three touchdowns. Sampson rushed for 60 yards and one touchdown, he also had 47 receiving yards and one touchdown grab. For the second week in a row, Wassom surpassed the century mark with 122 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Up next Simon Kenton travels to Dixie Heights on Oct. 11 at 7:00p.m. Following a week off, Boone County will travel to Campbell County on Oct. 19.
