Reading (1-0) junior defensive lineman, Shane Roy was a one man wrecking crew as the Blue Devils snapped a 10-game losing streak that dated all the way back to October, 29th 2010 as they knocked off Roger Bacon (0-1), 15-9. The Spartans could not handle Roy’s havoc as he registered 5.5 of the teams 6.0 sacks. His pressure forced bad decisions by Roger Bacon quarterbacks all night long. Reading was staunch on defense giving up less than 20 yards of total offense on the night.
Reading running back, Jacob Blair scored the first of his two touchdowns on the opening play of the second quarter to put the Blue Devils up 6-0. Roger Bacon answered with a Matt Brickler field goal to make it 6-3 with three minutes left before intermission. The Spartans weren’t done. Junior defensive back, Eli Nixon blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone right before half to give Roger Bacon the lead , 9-6.
The game stayed that way until seven minutes left in the final stanza when a snap went through the Roger Bacon punters hands and through the end zone for a safety, knotting the score at 9-9. It would end that way in regulation. Blair would cap of the Reading night with a touchdown run for plays into overtime to seal the deal and finish the night with 119 yards and the two score on the ground.
Reading will face another Division IV, Region 16 non-conference foe in Week 2 when they head to CHCA for a showdown. Roger Bacon will try to rebound at North College Hill.
