After falling behind early the NewCath Thoroughbreds rallied to knock the Dixie Heights Colonels in Friday’s Crosstown Showdown tilt, 37-22.
NewCath (1-0) senior running back Dylan Hayes scored four times, including three rushing touchdowns, to go along with a two-point conversion and an interception on defense the lead the way for the ‘Breds.
Dixie Heights’ (0-1) defense held on fourth down deep in their own territory early in the first quarter, and then quarterback Drew Moore exploded off the left side of the line for a seventy 9-yard touchdown run and the Colonels had a 7-0 lead just over two minutes into the game.
Dixie’s sophomore center Drew Brennen would come out of the game late in the first quarter with an apparent leg injury and the offense would take awhile to adjust.
The Colonels would struggle with the snap for a while and fifty seconds into the second quarter they would have a mishandled snap go out of the back of the endzone for New Cath’s first score as a safety.
Hayes would score his first touchdown on Dixie’s free kick returning it 55 yards. While Dixie would keep the game close and get to within eight points with Drew Moore’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Casey Cox with just over four minutes to go in the game, New Cath would prevail.
Both teams hit the road for Saturday matinees next week as NewCath travels to McNicholas and Dixie heads to CovCath.
