CINCINNATI - The Lloyd Juggernauts came into Saturday hoping to lay claim to Class 2A, District 6 title, but the Newport Central Catholic Throroughbreds had a very different idea as they dominated the game from the outset en route to their most impressive performance of the season in a 63-22 win.
Seniors Mason Myers and Dylan Hayes led the charge on the ground and the ‘Breds defense took care of the rest.
Myers put NewCath on the board first with 3-yard touchdown run by senior Mason Myers less than three minutes into the contest.
Following a Lloyd field goal, NCC would add to the lead when Hayes rushed for a 1-yard TD. A successful two-point conversion left the score at 14-3.
The Juggernauts’ next drive stalled quickly, leading to another ‘Breds touchdown less than two minutes later as Hayes exploded for a 50-yard TD scamper. The first quarter ended with the home team up 20-3.
Myers stepped it on defense early in the second quarter with a pick six and after another successful two-point conversion on a Josh Cain run it was quickly a 25-point spread.
Lloyd never got on track and was never able to recover and matters only got worse as Cain connected with Mac Franzen for the fourth time this season for a score on a 15-yard pass with 4:32 left in the half.
Running their hurry-up offense, the Juggernauts finally got on the board with a big play as Dexter Smith found on 50-yard scoring strike. Unfortunately, they left NewCath time to answer and the 'Breds responded as Myers found the end zone for the third time in half, rushing for 10-yard run with just a minute in the half.
The Juggernauts quickly gave the ball back again only to have Hayes match his teammate with a third first-half touchdown as he ran in a score from 25 yards out. With a 49-9 halftime lead the message was delivered and received. Lloyd would a couple of scores in garbage time, but it was too little too late.
NewCath looks to remain unbeaten in district play next week versus rival Newport while Lloyd will have two weeks to think about the game as they head for a bye before welcoming Newport on Oct. 19
