The Holy Cross Indians, the reigning Class 2A state champions, picked up their seventh straight victory, knocking off Dayton in convincing fashion in a 69-20 opening-season win.
Holy Cross (1-0) put 21 first-quarter points on the board and took a 41-12 lead in the locker room and never looked back.
New quarterback Travis Gabbard shined in his debut as the Indians’ starter by completing 16-of-20 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns while adding 87 more yards and score on nine rushing attempts. Classmate Vinny Pangallo was his favorite target, catching six balls for 119 yards and a score. Pangallo also recovered a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown in the win.
Senior DJ Walker ran for 109 yards and a touchdown also has a TD pass in the loss for Dayton (0-1).
Holy Cross will look to make eight straight when they meet Cooper at Simon Kenton next week as part of the Crosstown Showdown and Dayton is slated to welcome Lloyd.
