LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Rashawn Coston scored a game-high 23 points to lead Holmes to a 65-60 victory over Pleasure Ridge Park Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the Kentucky state boys’ Sweet 16 tournament at Rupp Arena.
The Bulldogs advance to take on Madison Central Friday at noon. Madison Central (29-5) beat Wayne County in an earlier first round game 81-56.
Holmes (32-2), which made it to Lexington, Ky. by knocking off Covington Catholic 62-60 Sunday in the Ninth Region title game, jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Pleasure Ridge Park (25-8) battled back and cut the deficit to four points by the end of three quarters of play, but a 20-point outburst in the fourth quarter helped Holmes to thwart the come-from-behind effort.
Coston was joined in double figures by a pair of underclassmen. Sophomore James Bolden added 13 points and freshman Chris Engelemon finished with 10 for the Bulldogs.
Pleasure Park, which ends its season with a 25-8 record, was led by a combined 39 points from juniors Lamontray Harris (20) and Antonio McDaniels (19).
