CINCINNATI - The Campbell County Camels maintained their first-place lead inside the district in Class 6A beating the Dixie Heights Colonels, but it wasn’t easy as they need a late touchdown to prevail, 36-32.
Trailing 32-29 with less than four minutes left in the game and pinned back on their own 5-yard line Campbell County (4-3, 2-0) took the lead for good when a quarterback Tyler Durham connected with Jake Zabonick on a 95-yard TD pass, most of which came on yards after the pass after Zabonick slipped through would-be tacklers to go the distance.
Dixie Heights (1-6, 0-2) showed some grit and played some tenacious defense on their way to building a 24-6 halftime lead. The Colonels held down Durham for the most part before intermission, holding the senior to just 34 yards rushing. However, the senior would get things going after the break and spark a miraculous Camels’ comeback.
Durham finished the night with 165 yards and two scores through the air while totaling 126 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns on the ground.
His counterpart, Dixie Heights sophomore Drew Moore, completed 17-of-27 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown. Junior Seth Caple contributed 11 carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.
Campbell County hosts Ryle next week while Dixie Heights is set to welcome Simon Kenton as both teams continue district play.
