GOODYEAR, Ariz. - A year ago, Todd Frazier fought hard to get to the big leagues. He led the Reds in most offensive categories in Cactus League games. When the Reds left Arizona, Frazier was with the team. When the Reds held a practice on the eve of Opening Day, Frazier was with the team.

On Opening Day, Frazier was gone.

The Reds had a chance to improve their bullpen by signing Alfredo Simon.  They needed a roster spot and Frazier was the most expendable. Todd Frazier was promptly shipped to the minors to start the 2012 season. It was very, very disappointing.

On April 17, Frazier was back.

The breaks started to go Frazier's way. He was needed when Miguel Cairo went down with an injury.  He was needed at third base when Scott Rolen was injured.  He was needed at first base when Joey Votto went down.

Todd Frazier lasted in the majors the rest of the season. He plans to stay there.

The 27-year old Frazier had an event-filled winter. He got married and bought a house.  Then his hometown of Toms River, New Jersey was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. Many friends and family were affected.  His mind wandered from baseball for a couple of weeks. Not for long.

Frazier showed he could hit at the big league level in 2012.  He hit .273 with 19 home runs and was the Players Choice for top National League rookie.

He says he came back hungrier than ever to prove his worth. His emphasis during the off-season was improving his footwork at third base, quickening his "first step" when balls are hit his way.

Dusty Baker says Frazier needs to "speed up and slow down" to elevate his game in 2013.  He needs to "speed up" in the field and "slow down" at the plate.

He has a month to show the Reds he can strike that delicate and difficult balance.
