CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with an umpire during Monday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

Major League Baseball announced the punishment Wednesday afternoon.

The rookie catcher got into an argument with Chad Fairchild over balls and strikes during the third inning. The argument escalated with Mesoraco making contact with Fairchild after he was ejected. Manager Dusty Baker was able to control Mesoraco before he left the field.

The Reds went on to lose the game 11-5, ending their 10-game winning streak. Cincinnati bounced back Tuesday night to knock off the Padres 7-6.

Mesoraco will appeal and could play Wednesday night. He left Tuesday night's game prior to the seventh inning because of dizziness.

Mesoraco is hitting .221 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in 46 games.

Ryan Hanigan is the only other Reds catcher on the 40-man roster so another catcher will have to be added if Mesoraco is suspended.

Game three between the Reds and Padres begins at 7:10 p.m. Cincinnati currently holds a three-game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Central.
