GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Left-hander Aroldis Chapman is headed back to the Cincinnati Reds' injury-depleted bullpen.
The Reds planned to let Chapman return to a starting role this season after spending most of the last two pitching in relief.
Their plans have changed because of injuries. Closer Ryan Madson is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his elbow. Set-up man Nick Masset will start the season on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder.
Chapman hoped to get back to starting this season. Manager Dusty Baker said it was a very difficult decision to move him into a relief role for now, but the injuries made it necessary.
The Reds also optioned shortstop Paul Janish to Triple-A Louisville on Monday before their final spring training game.
