Former Reds pitcher Frank Pastore dies after motorcycle crash
Sometimes Opening Day makes unlikely heroes, like Frank Pastore in 1980. The 22-year-old righthander was a late fill-in for Tom Seaver, who got sick. Pastore pitched a three-hitter and shut out the Braves 9-0.

LOS ANGELES - A former Reds pitcher died Monday from injuries he sustained during a motorcycle crash last month. He was 55 years old.
Frank Pastore died from the injuries he sustained in a Nov. 19 motorcycle accident, according to a MLB.com story . Pastore — who played for the Reds from 1979 through 1985 — was reportedly struck by a vehicle while he was on his motorcycle in California and sustained head trauma.
Most recently, Pastore took his faith to the radio as the host of the Christian talk show, “The Frank Pastore Show.” He hosted the show for about eight years on KKLA in Los Angeles.
One of the right-hander’s best season came in 1980 with the Reds when he achieved a 13-7 record with an ERA of 3.27 in 27 appearances. The Reds drafted Pastore in the second round in 1975.
Pastore had a 48-58 record and 4.29 ERA in 220 career games over eight Major League seasons.
After Pastore finished his baseball career with the Twins in 1986, he earned several degrees including business and political philosophy, but theology became his passion.
Pastore is survived by his wife, Gina and his two children.
