CINCINNATI - Just when Barry Larkin had to think that his summer of recognition had concluded, comes this from the Reds. The team announced tonight that they have conjured up an 11 Days of Larkin marathon, a series of celebrations from Aug. 16 through the 26 that will culminate in the retirement of his #11 uniform number. That will happen on Saturday Aug. 25 at 3 p.m., before the Reds-Cardinals game at 4:05.
Barry's will be the 10th jersey number retired by the Reds, joining Fred Hutchinson's #1, Johnny Bench's #5, Joe Morgan's #8, Sparky Anderson's #10, Dave Concepcion's #13, Ted Kluszewski's #18, Frank Robinson's #20, Tony Perez's #24 and Jackie Robinson's #42.
In a statement released by the team, Barry said, "My family and I are very excited about the special celebration in Cincinnati. Since January the entire Hall of Fame experience has been a dream for us, and the upcoming weekend will be a fitting end to an incredible summer. I want this to be a celebration about all Cincinnatian's who have made the city proud."
The festivities include free admission to the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum to all fans named "Barry", with any fan wearing Larkin gear being admitted for half-price.
The first 20,000 fans attending the Aug. 18, Reds-Cubs game, will receive a free Barry Larkin Reds cap, courtesy Fox Sports Ohio. Friday, Aug. 24, Barry's daughter Cymber, who wowed the audience at his Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown, will reprise her performance with her rendition of the National Anthem before the Reds-Cardinals game. It will be great for fans here to have an opportunity to re-live one of the Hall of Fame weekends high moments.
