Kentucky Speedway considering compensation for inconvenienced fans

SPARTA, Ky. - Kentucky Speedway officials apologized Monday to fans who weren't able to see the full Quaker State 400 race Saturday night or weren't able to even get to the track due to traffic problems.

"We apologize to fans and we take full responsibility," said Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger.

However, Simendinger added that "we will fix this."

Thousands of fans trying to get to the race were stuck in traffic for nearly 20 miles on southbound I-71. Some missed the start of the race while others turned around and drove back home. Many fans who finally made it the track had problems finding anywhere to park.

Speedway officials are expected to announce by the end of Monday a plan to "compensate" fans who were inconvenicied, but Simendinger didn't offer specifics.

Regarding fixes or changes for next year's race, Simendinger suggested it may require acquiring more land for parking or widening Speedway Drive or improving Speedway Drive into the track.

Nancy Wood, spokesperson for District 6 of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, said short-term fixes for the interstate itself are "not likely," but they will work with the track on whatever changes could be made.
