AUSTIN, Texas - Authorities in Austin, Texas, say Bengal Cedric Benson turned himself into the Travis County Jail late Tuesday night.

Benson had been expected to serve his 20-day sentence for misdemeanor assault during the Bengals bye week in October.

Benson was convicted of assault after punching a man in an Austin bar last year. He paid a $4,000 fine and was sentenced to 20 days in jail.

Since Beson is beginning to serve his time, he will miss Monday's practice but could be back by next Wednesday in time to prepare for the Cleveland game if he gets time off for good behavior.

Benson's attorney, Sam Bassett released a statement Tuesday night saying it was better for everyone involved that Benson serve his sentence early. Here is the full statement:

"Cedric Benson surrendered himself to the Travis County Jail this evening to serve his jail sentence for the 2010 Assault charge to which he entered a plea of no contest. Cedric is happy the July 2011 case has been dismissed.

Though originally scheduled to serve the jail sentence in October, Cedric decided he needs to complete the jail sentence before the season. This is best for everyone involved.

Mr. Benson is thankful for his supporters in Austin and Cincinnati. He is also grateful to the Bengals organization. Cedric looks forward to working hard on and off the field as soon as he is released."
