Woman who ruined Spanish fresco asking to be paid

The woman who ruined a 19th century fresco when she tried to restore it is now asking to be paid.

Cecilia Giménez is asking for of a portion of the thousands of euros that the church, Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja, collected from tourists coming to see the ruined artwork, according to an article on Nation Public Radio’s website . Giménez — a Spanish resident in her 80s — attempted to restore “Ecce Homo,” a fresco by painter Elias Garcia Martinez, but botched the painting instead.

Giménez originally endured scrutiny from around the world, but now she wants a portion of the money that tourists are paying to come see the work. The church collected 2,000 euros in the first four days — an equivalent of about $2,600.

According to Spanish reports, she has hired a lawyer to help her with her case and a court battle is expected. The church has also hired a lawyer, according to NPR.
