Ohio death-row inmate declines to ask for mercy

CINCINNATI (AP) -- An Ohio death-row inmate set for execution next month has declined to ask for mercy from the state's parole board.
Attorneys for inmate Donald Palmer did not present any arguments to the Ohio Parole Board at a hearing on Thursday in Columbus.
Normally attorneys argue for hours why their client deserves a life sentence rather than the death penalty.
Defense attorney David Stebbins says that Palmer asked him not to argue for clemency and to not comment on why he made that decision.
Palmer is scheduled to be executed Sept. 20 for fatally shooting two men in the head along a Belmont County road in eastern Ohio on May 8, 1989.
The board still can recommend clemency for Palmer to Gov. John Kasich, but Stebbins expects the execution to proceed.
