WAPAKONETA, Ohio - The museum that honors Neil Armstrong in his birth home of Wapakoneta, Ohio will be holding a special memorial service for the late astronaut Wednesday evening. Armstrong died over the weekend of complications from cardiovascular surgery in Cincinnati.

The Armstrong Air and Space Museum is holding an open memorial gathering on its lawn at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to honor the first man to walk on the moon.

"It will be a mixture of a salute to his military service, as well as the incredible things he has done after his military service," said Donna Grube, member of the Armstrong Museum Association's Board of Directors.

An exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center's Museum of Natural History and Science saw more than 2,000 visitors on Sunday, the first day it opened to free admission to honor Armstrong.

"We're hoping to have representatives of NASA in attendance there as well as people who knew Neil when he grew up in Wapakoneta," said Tony Sculimbrene, the executive director of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance.

President Barack Obama and Ohio Governor John Kasich have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Armstrong.

We'll have the Wapakoneta services for Armstrong streamed live here at WCPO.com.
