COUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who pointed a gun at them at a hotel on the city's north side.
Police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said officers were called to the Extended Stay America hotel just after midnight Friday on a report of a man with a gun threatening employees and guests.
The man -- identified as 28-year-old James Hattersley -- pointed a gun at officers as an elevator door opened on the second floor. Weiner said two officers fired multiple shots, killing him at the scene. Nobody else was hurt.
Hattersley's wife told investigators that he has a history of mental illness. Drugs and alcohol are also suspected to have been a factor.
