COLUMBUS, Ohio - A 5-year-old boy who fell through ice on a pond at an apartment complex in Columbus on Thursday has died.

The Columbus Police Department announced that Elijah T. Walker was pronounced dead at 5:51 p.m. Sunday after battling for his life at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

James R. Jenkins, 30, was pronounced dead Thursday after going into the water in an attempt to rescue the boy from the pond located at the Hartford on the Lake apartments off Hamilton Road.

Efforts to rescue both the boy and Jenkins by bystanders and firefighters were unsuccessful. Rescue divers were called into retrieve the victims from the water.

According to the police report, Jenkins was unconscious when he was pulled from the water nearly 50 minutes after the initial 911 call. The boy was also unconscious when he was rescued 12 minutes later.

Jenkins died at Grant Medical Center within half an hour of arrival.
