Survey: Facebook responsible for 1 out of 5 of divorces

CLEVELAND - A recent British survey is blaming Facebook for nearly a third of all divorces.  The survey says more couples are citing what they see on their spouse's profile page as evidence when it comes to a reason for a divorce.

Dr. Scott Bea is a clinical psychologist at Cleveland Clinic.  He says sometimes less is more.

"I think social media right now really draws on people giving too much information and until they experience the consequence of that, it may be hard for some people to really pull back," said Dr. Bea.

The UK survey found about 20 percent of divorce petitions contained Facebook references. The most common reason cited seemed to be people having inappropriate chats with other online users.

One woman even found out her husband was planning to divorce her through Facebook.

Dr. Bea says social media can make once private relationship issues very public.

"It's hard for people, I think. Our shame and humiliation now can be publicized. One statistic says 20 percent of people think it's OK just to change your relationship status in order to created the break-up, so break-ups may be occurring in kind of cold and callous ways, but there also very public and humiliating ways as well," said Dr. Bea.
