Lawyer for Ex-Ben-Gal cheerleader asks to suppress cellphone, text message records

COVINGTON, Ky. - Former Ben-Gal Sarah Jones was in court on Monday, and a lawyer for Jones asked the judge to suppress her cellphone and text message records. 

Authorities have charged Jones with felony sex abuse and unlawful use of electronic devices for illegal purposes.

The abuse charges involve a student at Dixie Heights High School.

And on Monday the mother of the former Ben-Gal cheerleader accused of having sex with one of her students retired from the Northern Kentucky school district where she served as principal.

Cheryl Jones retired from Twenhofel Middle School in Taylor Mill on June 1 after serving as principal at the school, according to Kenton County Schools Superintendent Terry Cox-Cruey. Cheryl is charged with evidence tampering after her daughter, Sarah Jones was accused of having sex with a student.

Cheryl was put on administrative leave from her job in March.

After the allegations against Cheryl came to light, Assistant Principal Travis Caudill assumed the responsibilities of principal. He was supported by Kelly Connor, Director of Student Engagement for the district.

Cheryl retired with full benefits, Cox-Cruey said.

Sarah formerly taught at Dixie Heights High School and was a member of the cheerleading squad for the Cincinnati Bengals. Sarah resigned from her teaching position Nov. 30 for personal reasons.

The pair entered not guilty pleas in March and requests to have their bonds reduced have been denied.

School district representatives have not released any additional details about Cheryl's retirement.

Cheryl and Sarah are scheduled to stand trial June 27.
