WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. - A N.Ky. soldier is being called a hero after helping save the lives of three children from a flash flood in Afghanistan.
Rob Huff of Williamstown along with three soldiers from the 101st Airborne helped rescue the children after flood swept through their village in Jalalabad.
”They were going through doing a patrol on their way to a mission and there was a man on the side of the road begging and pleading for their help saying he had three small children trapped in a house and the stone walls were being washed away by the rapid currents,” said Amanda Buring, Sgt. Huff’s girlfriend.
A powerful picture captured by another soldier shows Sgt. Huff and Cpl. Patrick O’Rourke saving a baby from the flood waters.
The soldiers, including SFC Stoner and SSG Lopez, also saved others trapped in the high water.
“I think he said yesterday on Facebook that he was just doing what he would hope someone else would do for his family. So it’s a very cool thing,” said Buring.
Sgt. Huff is a father of three daughters and a grandfather to a 6-month-old baby girl named Addlyn. She is close in age to the baby he rescued.
”He’s such a good guy that if he ever saw any kid in help he would rush to him. No matter if it could risk his safety. He loves kids. He loves his family,” said Ashlyn Huff, Sgt. Huff’s daughter.
His family couldn’t be more proud.
”He’s missed a lot of our lives and I just think that it’s good to see him help someone else,” said Kirstin Huff, Sgt. Huff’s daughter.
