CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - A standing crowd attended a lecture in Thomas More College's Steigerwald Hall that focused on health care reform Thursday night.
Thomas More Students, Faculty, and members of the community were invited to listen to featured speaker Dr. Bill Evans, an Economics Professor at the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Evans talked about what the healthcare reforms should do and addressed the main issues.
"There's a lot of uncertainty about it, what the bill's going to do, so I think people are a little bit hesistant about what's going to happen in the future. Maybe [they're] happy that it's been passed, there's a lot of uncertainty about what the healthcare system is going to look like in the future," said Evans.
Kimberly Wyatt, a 21 year old Thomas More Senior, said that she was encouraged to attend the lecture by both her Philosophy Professor and her Theology Professor.
"It's just to hear more about it, I've done reading independently from different political sides of the spectrum, but I really wanted to hear unbiased and just educational/analytical perspective of what it's all about."
Dr Evans said that he hopes people leave the meeting with a basic understanding of what the issues are of the health care debate.
"There's two big problems, one is that 46 million people don't have health insurance and the other is that healthcare is very expensive," said Evans. "So we're going to try to provide for people by subsidizing their coverage, that's what the expansion of the health insurance program is going to do and but we have to reign in costs, that's the much more difficult issue."
