FLORENCE, Ky. - Captain John McDermond of the Florence Police Department was named the department’s new police chief on Monday, according to Florence Mayor Diane Whalen.
“The city of Florence is fortunate we have officers within our ranks who can continue to lead our police department,” Whalen said in a release.
McDermond replaces outgoing police chief, Tom Szurlinski, on April 1.
"I am very thankful for this opportunity," McDermond stated. "Chief Szurlinski has done a fantastic job leading this department and I feel very fortunate to inherit a police department with such high professional standards."
McDermond is a 23-year veteran of the Florence Police Department, starting as a patrol officer in 1990 and rising through the ranks of the department. McDermond holds a degree in sociology from the University of Georgia, graduated from the Southern Police Institute, and holds multiple certifications within the department.
