ERLANGER, Ky. - A Northern Kentucky entrepreneur says he's created a ready made product to clean up the oil spill along the Gulf coast.
Russ Markesbery is President and CEO of Hydra-Tone Chemicals, Inc. based out of Erlanger.
His product to clean up the mess is called "Eagle Kleen".
It's a degreaser designed with a solvent called methyl ester microemulsion.
Methyl ester micro emulsion is a combination of coconut oil or palm oil that basically is formulated into our technology that gives it a biobase material that acts as our main solvent for cutting oil," said Russ Markesbery of Hydra-Tone Chemicals, Inc.
Marksebery demonstrated what happens when his product is applied to the oil.
"So as an example we will spray some of this in here and Eagle Kleen what you will see, it will turn into an emulsion," said Markesbery.
Within seconds, the oil turns into a liquid.
The product goes one step further.
When salt is added, it will separate the oil from the degreaser creating two separate layers.
"Within 45 minutes of adding the salt, mixed up in the tank, a separation process will take place, the methyl esther micro emulsion leaves our product Eagle Kleen and couples and bonds with the oil forming a biodiesel reaction," said Markesbery.
The product is designed to clean hard surfaces so it can't be applied directly into the ocean. The oil will have to be contained in a vessel first.
"This is the real deal. We've proven it and we've tested it and it's a matter of the government stepping up to the plate and getting it done," said Markesbery.
Markesbery said he has been in contact with BP officials and leaders in washington.
He's just waiting to hear what happens next.
