COVINGTON, Ky. - A man is in police custody after leading police on a chase that ended with him hiding in a Covington apartment early Tuesday morning.
Police pulled over a speeding driver on Madison Avenue in Covington at about 2 a.m. When police found a gun in the vehicle, the driver— who had prior offenses— fled from police on foot.
The suspect, Shawn Williams, led police on a chase until he ran inside a home with multiple apartments on Scott Boulevard. Police surrounded the building and started evacuating everyone inside. One couple and their baby came down a ladder because they thought the suspect was inside their apartment.
The apartment’s owner, who was awake when the suspect entered the home, gathered his family and barricaded themselves into a room. The apartment’s owner pushed out a window air conditioning unit to escape and alert nearby police.
When police responded to the residence, they could not find the suspect, but some misplaced insulation led officials to locate him hiding in the attic.
Williams is in the Kenton County Justice Center facing a long list of charges including speeding, driving with a suspended license, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, fleeing from police and burglary.
One of the officers involved in the search was K-9 officer and Specialist Mark Richardson who was shot in the foot back in September while on duty.
Tuesday was Richardson's second day back on the job after his leave.
Authorities have not released any additional details at this time.
