Covington's 911 dispatch center discontinued

COVINGTON - Kenton County's 911 dispatch center more than doubled the amount of calls they'll be taking in after consolidating with Covington dispatch Sunday.
The decision to shut down the dispatch center in Covington was made by the Covington City Commission in April.
Commissioners say it's a move that could save millions of dollars and improve public safety. But dispatchers are worried the response time could slow down because Kenton County's dispatch center is not as familiar with Covington's smaller streets.
The Director of Communications for the Kenton Co. Police Department Ed Butler argued that notion saying that 12 of the 16 employees who lost their positions at the Covington dispatch center were rehired through Kenton County. Kenton County is the only county in the state with three dispatch centers.
Changes are being made to the city of Covington's administrative phone line, 859-292-2222. Currently the number, which was answered by a Covington dispatcher before Sunday morning, will be answered using an auto attendant function. The number will remain operational for the residents of Covington, or anyone needing to do business with the city of Covington after the consolidation.
