Covington police perform sex offender sweep

COVINGTON, Ky. - Covington police spent Wednesday night checking on sex offenders in the city to make sure they're living where they should be. Under Kentucky law registered sex offenders can't live within 1,000 feet of schools, day care centers and parks.

Three teams of detectives hit the streets to check on all 89 registered sex offenders living in the city.

Police say a complaint from the public spurred the operation.

"We can have all the great statistics we want, but if you don't feel safe, if you don't feel secure, we haven't done our job," Lt. Jim Donaldson said.

Many of the offenders at the addresses detectives checked were not home. In those cases they'll have to check back.

Late in the day detectives approached a home in Latonia where a sex offender had registered, but the residents told police he didn't live there.

"This is exactly why we're doing so many in one night, just to try and get as many as we can and verify their addresses, and then figure out which ones we need to follow up more closely with," said Detective Nick Klaiss.

Any sex offender found not complying with the law faces a felony charge.
