Gap Inc. to close 2 distribution centers in Hebron

HEBRON, Ky. - A spokesperson for Gap Inc. announced Wednesday two product distribution centers will close in Hebron, Ky. this summer, which will affect hundreds of jobs.

More than 350 positions will be eliminated by June 30 as a result.

Edie Kissko, spokesperson for Gap Inc., said the company is "making adjustments to its distribution model for its brands to drive efficiency, speed to market and product availability for customers."

The two other Gap Inc. facilities in Hebron, the National Recovery Center and Dolwick Logistics Business Center, will not be affected, according to Kissko. The closings will take place in a phased-approach.

According to Kissko, 150 people will remain employed at the other two facilities.

Kissko said Gap Inc. will work with employees over the months to make the transition smooth and help as many employees as they can find other means of employment.

The Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is stepping in to help out the 350 workers who will be losing their jobs.

Nancy Spivey with the Chamber of Commerce has been in talks with Gap representatives and will soon be scheduling meetings with all 350 employees in the next couple of weeks. Her goal is to match the skills of the employees with other employers in the area looking for those same skill sets. One way she does that is by using the website Jobs-Nky.com .

Spivey said any layoffs is a loss to the market.

"A number like that is really not tremendous for our community, it's not several thousand," Spivey said.  "Obviously any type of negative impact is an impact on our community, whether it's one individual or 300 individuals. We need to study the type of position, what's their skills sets, etc."
