OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University is reacting to news that alumnus Paul Ryan has been picked to run for Vice President on the Republican ticket.

Ryan graduated from Miami in 1992 with degrees in economics and political science.

"Politics aside, it's a great day when one of your alums steps up and has such a terrific opportunity," said Miami University President David Hodge.

Ryan gave the commencement address at Miami in 2009.

He has stayed in contact with faculty members, including economics professor Rich Hart.

"He had that characteristic that's increasingly rare among college students these days, he was intellectually curious." said Hart.

Ryan was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity while at Miami.

Current students hope his rise in politics will benefit the university.

"It definitely shows that we do have star students who come out of Miami University," said Miami senior Tarah Cook.
