MASON, Ohio - Staff at Mason High School met Monday to discuss the best ways to help students deal with their emotions after the Connecticut school shooting, and all students were given a refresher about the school’s safety plan.
Mindy McCarty-Stewart, Mason High School principal, sent an email to parents of the students outlining the district’s response to Friday’s incident in Newtown, Conn.
“We continue to encourage our school community to keep the lines of communication open and report any potential safety concerns,” Stewart wrote.
“Please continue to talk to your child at home about their conversations and reactions to today's review of our safety plan,” she added.

Dear Parents,
As the principal of your children I want to take a moment to let you know that I understand your concerns, fears and your grieving caused by the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. The Mason High School staff met early on Monday morning to review tips on how to help students discuss and listen to their concerns. We reviewed our safety plan as a staff. The students took part in a review of our A.L.I.C.E. training during 1st bell.
The A.L.I.C.E. plan stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and/or evacuate. This is a Nationwide plan that we have implemented in partnership with our Safe & Inviting School Committee and the local law enforcement. We have provided details about A.L.I.C.E. for parents on our Edline page.
Our staff is prepared to help support students as they process and cope with this tragedy. We continue to encourage our school community to keep the lines of communication open and report any potential safety concerns. Please continue to talk to your child at home about their conversations and reactions to today's review of our safety plan. I welcome any feedback. Educating your child in a safe environment is always our priority.
If you or your child needs additional support, please let me know.
