HAMILTON, Ohio - A man was arrested Thursday morning for allegedly selling heroin and prescription medication to the residents of Hamilton.

Hamilton police say they first searched two homes simultaneously Thursday morning, one at 1926 Grand Boulevard and the other at 649 Vine Street, after investigating Earl Cavin Jr. for several months on suspicion of selling heroin and prescription medication.

At the Grand Boulevard home, detectives located a Taurus 9mm handgun, 14 unit doses of heroin, illegal prescription medication, $1,150 in U.S. Currency, scales and other packaging material, seized a 2003 Cadillac and a 1990 Chevrolet truck. The residence is within a 1000 feet of Crawford Woods Elementary School which enhances the degree of the offense.

At 649 Vine Street, detectives arrested a person who was waiting to be sold heroin. Their identity has not been released. Once in the residence, detectives recovered a large chunk of heroin (9 grams), 70 unit doses of heroin in gel caps, large amounts of illegal prescription medication, as well as scales and other drug paraphernalia.

Detectives then conducted another search warrant at 428 N. 5th Street, where they seized a third vehicle, a 1988 Cadillac, and recovered $9,000 in U.S. currency from the vehicle. Detectives then found three handguns in the residence along with a large safe.

Detectives finally conducted a search warrant at 367 N. 6th Street and recovered drug packaging material.

The going price for a unit dose of heroin in Hamilton is $20 and the size of a unit dose is a tenth (1/10) of a gram. The street value of the drugs confiscated from the drug trafficker during the search warrants would be close to $3,500 in heroin and $1,000 worth of illegal prescription medication.

Detectives arrested Cavin for multiple felonies; one of the felonies was for having weapons under disability, the 9mm handgun. Cavin has prior convictions for attempted murder as well as trafficking in drugs and is currently on parole with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
