FAIRFIELD TWP., Ohio - Hazmat crews and firefighters removed hazardous materials that were found inside a Fairfield Township residence during a drug raid Friday afternoon.
Fairfield Township Fire Chief Timothy Thomas said his department was forced to evacuate 35 homes as a precautionary measure.
All evacuated residents were permitted to return to their homes around 8 p.m., fire officials said. Fire crews had evacuated anyone who lived within a 100-meter radius of the property located in the 6400 block of Ravena Drive Friday afternoon.
The hazardous materials were uncovered after a county drug agency conducted a raid at the home around 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Once inside the home, law enforcement officials were told by a male occupant that hazardous materials in liquid and powder forms were inside the home, according to Fire Chief Tim Thomas. Thomas told 9 News that some of the toxic materials were found in open containers.
The materials removed from the home have not yet been identified by officials with the hazmat team, but Fire Chief Thomas said the home was not operating as a meth lab.
Police made two arrests as a result of the drug raid. One person was arrested in connection with the police operation, while another person was arrested for outstanding warrants.
During the initial call, a female occupant of the home was treated by emergency crews for what is being described as chest pains. When emergency crews arrived, police conducted a full investigation of the home which led to the discovery of the unknown chemicals.
The condition of the woman has not been released.
