LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. - Newtown Park in Lawrenceburg, Ind. shares the same name of the city where a deadly school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took the lives of 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Conn.
Monday evening the community held a candlelight vigil for the victims at Newtown Park in Lawrenceburg to remember and pray.
Beth York, a mother of two who attended the vigil, said she is having trouble putting herself in the shoes of the parents who lost a child on Friday.
"I couldn't imagine what they're going through right now," York said. "Grief, anger, frustration, many emotions on what they're going through right now."
While it is hard for her to imagine, she wants her children to understand what happened.
"You can't shield them," York said. "You have to keep an open mind and hope and pray something like that doesn't happen here."
By attending the vigil, York's daughter Malaya, 8, learned about supporting one another and importance of community. Her brother Adrian, 10, stood by her side. During school on Monday, he said his teachers told he and his classmates what they should do in a time of crisis.
"Like if this were to happen, we would just do a lockdown and be quiet and sit in corner and be as quiet as we could," Adrian said.
